59. Legend of Earthsea
Based on novels by Ursula K. Le Guin, I was curious to watch it. I’ve read one book by her and know she’s a good writer – unfortunately what was on screen was a generic fantasy piece (made somewhat interesting by a cast with folks from Eureka and Smallville). The irony is (according to Wikipedia) “Le Guin has criticised what she describes as the general assumption in fantasy, that characters should be white and the society should resemble the Middle Ages”, which is exactly what’s up there on screen. D
Apparently there is an anime version of the story, but it’s held up in a rights dispute for another year.
